Neal & Harwell attorneys understand the importance of access to justice for all. Providing pro bono legal assistance to under-served individuals and non-profit organizations is a duty for the bar in general that helps to strengthen our community. In furtherance of the aspirational Rule of the Tennessee Supreme Court, the firm encourages each attorney to commit to providing at least 50 hour of pro bono service per year.
Over the years, Neal & Harwell attorneys have been especially active in the pro bono defense of individuals accused of crime, both on a volunteer and court-appointed basis. This has included the defense of capital cases in state post-conviction and federal habeas corpus proceedings. E.g., Cecil Johnson v. Phil Bredesen, Governor, 558 U.S. 1067 (2009) (statement of Justice Stevens respecting the denial of certiorari).
Other pro bono endeavors have included:
- Federal Civil Rights
- Veteran’s Benefits
- Landlord-Tenant Disputes
